(Moorpark, California) February 20, 2024—Moorpark Unified School District’s Child Nutrition Serves was recently recognized by California state Sen. Nancy Skinner (D-Oakland) for its participation in the California Food for California Kids Network.

MUSD has been a part of the statewide program since it began in 2022 after the passage a year earlier of the Free School Meals for All Act.

“This recognition is truly an acknowledgment of all the hard work and dedication put in by our Child Nutrition Services team to ensure all of our students have access to the meals they need to succeed in class and throughout the day,” Director of Child Nutrition Services Orlando Orozco said.

The legislation ensures that all K-12 public school students have access to nutritious meals at no cost, aiming to eliminate hunger barriers and promote academic success by providing universal free meals regardless of income. The legislation addresses food insecurity concerns and strives to create an equitable and supportive educational environment for California's students.

“Just like textbooks, school meals are now a universal part of every child’s school day—reducing stigma, hunger and barriers to nutrition,” Skinner, the Senate majority whip from the Ninth District wrote in her Feb. 1 letter applauding the efforts of MUSD’s Child Nutrition Services for providing breakfast and lunch to all K-12 students who take part in the program.

“Thank you for joining the Network and this powerful movement for school food systems change,” Skinner wrote.

Orozco said Child Nutrition Services remains dedicated to guaranteeing healthy meals for Moorpark Unified students.

“Proper nutrition is a truly meaningful investment in the wellbeing of our students, and our team is so pleased to be recognized by the state Senate for the work we do,” he said.
