MUSD Board Authorizes Feasibility Study for Potential Aquatic Center

MOORPARK, Calif. (Feb. 25, 2026)—The Moorpark Unified School District Board of Education voted 5–0 on Feb. 24 to move forward with the first formal step toward a potential aquatic center, approving a proposal for a feasibility study to examine whether and how the project could be built.

Trustees awarded the architectural services proposal to Ruhnau Clarke Architects, authorizing a not-to-exceed fee of $40,000 to conduct the study. The cost will be paid from the district’s building fund.

MUSD officials emphasized that the vote does not approve construction of a pool.

Instead, it allows the district to take a closer look at what the project would involve, including the size and scope of a potential facility, site realities, estimated construction and long-term maintenance costs and a realistic timeline tied to available funding.

“A community pool has been talked about for years, both inside our district and across Moorpark,” Superintendent Dr. Kelli Hays said. “The challenge has always been funding, not just the cost to build it, but the long-term cost to operate and maintain it. As we’ve navigated the pandemic, budget pressures and our responsibility to be financially prudent, we have to approach a project of this size carefully.”

Hays said the goal is to ground the conversation in data and provide the community with what she described as a “clear-eyed reality” of the financial commitment required, allowing the Board to weigh the project’s immediate and long-term implications.

The feasibility study will focus on the former Community High School property at 5700 Condor Drive in Moorpark, a site identified in the district’s draft Facilities Master Plan as a potential location for expanded facilities, including a district pool.

Early concepts include demolition of an existing two-story classroom building, modernization of a single-story structure and construction of a competitive pool capable of supporting swimming, water polo and community programming, along with locker rooms, changing areas, fencing and other site improvements.
