Moorpark Unified Advances to Silver-Level in 2025 Green Ribbon Recognition

 

MOORPARK, Calif. (April 22, 2025)—Moorpark Unified School District has been named a Silver-level honoree in the 2025 California Green Ribbon Schools awards, marking a significant milestone in its growing commitment to sustainability, student wellness and environmental education.

The announcement was made this week by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, who recognized 29 schools, seven school districts and three county offices of education for their efforts to conserve resources, promote health and expand environmental literacy. Moorpark Unified was the only district in Ventura County to earn a Silver distinction and one of just seven school districts recognized statewide.

“This award places MUSD in the top 1% of California school districts for our environmental efforts and is a reflection of the passion and dedication of our entire district,” Superintendent Dr. Kelli Hays said. “Sustainability is not just a goal for Moorpark Unified—it’s a responsibility we take seriously, and I’m proud of the progress we continue to make.”

The Silver-level recognition builds on Moorpark Unified’s Bronze award from the previous year and reflects deepening efforts to incorporate sustainability across operations and instruction.

The district has installed solar panels at seven schools and the district office, expanded school gardens, upgraded to drip irrigation, and increased its use of eco-friendly purchasing practices. Work is currently underway at Flory Academy of Sciences and Technology and solar installations will begin this summer at Moorpark High School and Mesa Verde Middle School.

“Sustainability isn’t just something we teach—it’s something we model,” said Nathan Inouye, assistant director of Instructional Services, who led the application process. “Our students are seeing firsthand how small choices can have a big impact, and that’s incredibly powerful.”

Moorpark Unified has also integrated environmental awareness into student learning experiences. Lessons in environmental literacy, nutrition education and social-emotional wellness are embedded in classroom instruction and supported through the district’s network of school-based Wellness Centers.

The California Green Ribbon Schools Award program evaluates schools and districts based on their performance in three key areas: reducing environmental impact and costs, improving the health and wellness of students and staff and providing effective environmental and sustainability education.

The state program mirrors the U.S. Department of Education’s national Green Ribbon Schools awards.

A statewide awards ceremony will take place later this year to honor all California recipients.
