Arroyo West Welcomes New Principal: Michael Paris

MOORPARK, Calif. (August 5, 2025)—Michael Paris has been named the new principal of Arroyo West Active Learning Academy. Mr. Paris succeeds Sally Wennes, who has accepted a principal position in another district after serving at Arroyo West since 2020.
Mr. Paris will continue the school’s mission to nurture strong readers and writers, spark curiosity through inquiry-based learning and ensure every student feels supported and challenged.
The appointment was unanimously approved by Moorpark Unified’s Board of Trustees during its August 5 meeting.
“Michael brings a thoughtful and steady approach to leadership,” Superintendent Dr. Kelli Hays said. “He has shown time and again that he leads with compassion and purpose. His work at Moorpark High reflects a clear commitment to creating meaningful learning experiences and supporting staff in their efforts to help every student grow.”
Mr. Paris brings more than seven years of school leadership experience, including five years as principal of Ivy Bound Academy in Sherman Oaks and two years as assistant principal at Moorpark High School. Across both roles, he has been recognized for his collaborative approach, thoughtful decision-making, and deep commitment to student success.
He said he was drawn to Arroyo West’s academic vision and strong sense of community.
“Arroyo West is a place where students are encouraged to think critically, explore ideas and grow as readers, writers and learners,” he said. “The school’s literacy-based approach, combined with high expectations and individualized support, creates a dynamic and welcoming environment. It’s the kind of school every child deserves.”
He added that serving as an elementary principal is especially rewarding.
“This is where it all begins,” he said. “Elementary school is where students learn who they are, what they’re capable of and how to take pride in their work. Helping young learners is one of the most meaningful parts of my work.”
Mr. Paris said he is honored to join the Arroyo West community and is eager to begin the year.
“It means a great deal to be entrusted with this opportunity,” he said. “I’m excited to meet our students and families and to work alongside a dedicated staff that clearly cares deeply about its school.”
Mr. Paris joined Moorpark Unified in 2023 after nine years at Ivy Bound Academy in Sherman Oaks, where he began as a fifth-grade English teacher and later served five years as principal of the 240-student charter school.
He began his teaching career at Morningside High School in Inglewood following his graduation from California State University, Northridge in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in English and a single-subject teaching credential. He later earned a master’s degree in administrative education from CSUN and an administrative services credential from the University of California, Berkeley.
A native of Oak Park, Mr. Paris lives in Agoura Hills with his wife, Samantha, and their two daughters, Lila and Nora.
