Free Medical Billing and Coding Course Offered at Moorpark Adult School

WOMAN DOING MEDICAL BILLING

(Moorpark, California) April 25, 2024—A new course at Moorpark Adult School is helping students find high-paying jobs in the ever-growing healthcare industry.

Medical Billing and Coding is a free online class that offers the national certification needed for prospective employees to become medical records specialist, a job that averages over $55,000 a year, according to the 2022 Salary Survey results.

“The idea for this class came out of a conversation I had with an executive at a local hospital about the types of jobs the hospital needed the most,” Principal Sean Abajian said. “Medical records specialists nearly topped the list.”

Abajian said pharmacy technicians, another certification course Moorpark Adult School offers, also ranked as being in high-demand in healthcare.

“We were really surprised when we opened up registration for Medical Billing and Coding because so many people signed up to take it,” Abajian said of the 18-week course that began March 20 and has 50 students enrolled.

The class is offered in both Spanish and English and is taught by Angelica Paredes.

Students work online at their own pace and meet once a week via Zoom with Paredes to go over weekly lessons.

The course is funded through one-time $130 million appropriation of Prop. 98 funds to support a three-year program to develop healthcare-focused vocational pathways for English language learners through adult education programs.

Abajian has helped oversee a resurgence of the Moorpark Adult School as enrollment has skyrocketed in the past two years.

In addition to the core courses offered at the adult school—U.S. Citizenship, English as a Second Language (ESL) and General Educational Development (GED)—Moorpark Adult School also offers Computer Basics, Culinary Arts and Pharmacy Technician.

Moorpark Adult School was granted accreditation status by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in February.

The free Medical Billing and Coding course will be offered in the fall. For more information, please visit https://adulted.mrpk.org/
