        Mesa Verde Middle School Library

Our library is a pleasant place to access resources, research, study and relax.  Students are encouraged to think of the library as a "home away from home". The library is the perfect place for the pursuit of personal and educational growth.

The students, faculty and staff at Mesa Verde Middle School share the responsibility of maintaining an environment which allows the library to serve the needs of all.  We strive to provide a collection of instructional materials to support and contribute to the curriculum, to provide materials and reference services for the completion of class assignments, and homework as well as provide a variety of books for personal enrichment and pleasure reading.

Book Club News

BOOK CLUB

Our first Book Club meeting will be in September. Everyone is welcome to attend. The books we discussed during our last school year are listed below. We are planning on 'Book Club' taking a more active role at Mesa Verde for the 2010-2011 school year. Come join us!
                                                        ~

Book Club meetings are held monthly  during Lunch breaks

The purpose of our book club is to read and enjoy literature. So, if you love books, and you're ready to discuss them.... this is the place! We encourage our students to share their thoughts in an open atmosphere.

_____________________________________________________________

October, 2009 - Banned Book Week discussion. Book Club participants discussed books that were on the American Library Association's list of frequently banned or challenged books.

November, 2009 - 6th Grade participants chose to discuss the book "Twilight" by Stephenie Meyer. 7th and 8th grade participants chose Lois Lowry's 1994 Newbury Award winning book "The Giver".

December, 2010 - Due to Winter Break and our shortened school month, each student had the opportunity to discuss their favorite book and the reasons why it is their favorite. December is often a time of reflection and this enabled our participants to share.

January, 2010 - All grades discussed the popular novel "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins. There was lively discussion about the scenario of the novel against modern day similarities such as reality TV and events like the Olympic games.

February, 2010 - The D.J. MacHale novel "The Merchant of Death" was the selection chosen by our Book Club participants for this month. It is the first book in the popular "Pendragon" series.  Each participating student was able to recieve a free copy of the book to keep!

March, 2010 - The Book Club selection for the month of March was "Stargirl" by Jerry Spinelli.  This book dealt with popularity, individuality/conformity, and acceptance. There was thought provoking discussion dealing with 'fitting in' and tolerance. Many students continued on with the sequel to "Stargirl" - "Love, Stargirl".

April, 2010 - In observance of 'Holocaust Remembrance Month' our students read any book dealing with the sensitive topic of the Holocaust. Books discussed were 'Boy in the Striped Pajamas', 'Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl', 'Milkweed', 'Night' and others.

May, 2010 - With the end of the school year being such a busy time we had a guest speaker from the Moorpark City Library - the Teen Librarian - to speak on their summer reading program. We also had a special activity planned.

Students should be prepared to discuss the books as well as have suggestions for our next Book Club book selection.
