With Reading Counts! students independently read self-selected books at their reading level. After reading, students individually take a computerized quiz that will assess how well they understood the book. When students pass a quiz, they are awarded points based on the number of correct answers and the difficulty of the text. The Reading Counts! Program supports the development of several essential reading skills including: fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
Each book is given a point value based on the text difficulty. The length of sentences, the complexity of the structure of the text, the difficulty of the vocabulary, the length of the book and the number of words are all considered.
Talk with your child about what they're reading. Make reading a fun part of your daily life! Remember, reading achievement is positively related to the amount of time students spend independently reading. In addition to our collection at the Mesa Verde Middle School Library, many of the 'Reading Counts!' books can also be found on the shelves at the Moorpark Library.
PLEASE NOTE: Our Reading Counts! Quiz list is undergoing some MAJOR changes in the 2009/2010 school year. We have gone from slightly over 3,000 quizzes to over 50,000 quizzes! We thank you for your patience as we upgrade our Reading Counts! Program. Access to all new quizzes, written by Scholastic on a monthly basis, will be available as well. The new list we are working on has gone from 68 pages to 1,402 pages of quizzes! Due to the constant updating of the list we will no longer have a printed "hard copy" available in our library, but will encourage access via the internet.
We wish to thank our technology department, administrators, staff, and MUSD School Board for this wonderful advancement.
THE LISTS BELOW DO NOT REFLECT THE UPDATES OF THE LAST YEAR. PLEASE REFER TO THE LINK ABOVE FOR CURRENT QUIZ AVAILABILITY.
