Nightly reading and math fact expectations:

All students at FAST are expected to read at home nightly.  Second Graders should be reading at least 15 minutes nightly and recording their reading on their Reading Log.  A parent signature is required as proof that the student  actually read.  Research shows that children should be able to read 99% of the books they read. There are books available to check out of my classroom every night. I also recommend a weekly trip to the Moorpark Public Library to check out a stack of books at a time.

Every Friday students at FAST take a Mighty Math Mastery test.  In second grade students are required to pass a 75 question addition and subtraction test, each in 5 minutes.  When that has been accomplished, the students work to pass the same tests in 3 minutes.  After that, students are given a multiplication test on 1's. 2's, 5,s and 10,s.  If they should pass all these tests, and most students do, they can take test from grades above 2nd. Learning addition and subtraction facts to 20 requires memorization, which requires frequent practice.  We expect parents to help with this process.
