 January character trait is “Self-Discipline”

Language Arts

Our story this week was Me On The MapThe students learned that there are street, city, state, country, and world maps.  Our strategy focus was to summarize a story.  Our comprehension skill focus was making generalizations.  In phonics the students learned how to blend long a words (CVCe).  The students learned that if you add e to Consonant-Vowel-Consonant words like mat(e), cap(e), hat(e), the short a now becomes a long a sound.

Math

This week in math the children began a new math topic on making patterns.  Patterns can be identified and extended using both words and symbols.  The students will be working with color, shape, and comparing patterns next week.  Encourage your child to look for patterns in events, shapes, designs, and sets of objects.  This helps them begin to understand how mathematics applies to their world.

Science

In science this week the children learned about the 3 main types of clouds which are cirrus, cumulus, and stratus.  The children also had a fun time making a model of the 3 main types of clouds using cotton balls.  Next week we will be studying the water cycle.

Read To Succeed/Six Flags Reading Club

I am hoping to see a lot of reading logs coming in soon.  The due date to turn your log in to earn your free Magic Mountain ticket is February 15th.  I will not be able to accept any reading logs after this date.

 Social Studies

This week in social studies, the children have been studying about different types of maps and what you can find on them.  We looked at city, state, country, and world maps this week in class.  We also made a world map of the seven continents.

 Book Fair

Flory Academy will be hosting another book fair the week of January 28th.  Our class will be visiting the book fair on Thursday, January 31st at 10:30am.  If you would like your child to purchase books on Thursday please place the check or cash in a plastic baggie labeled with your child’s name and room number.  In your child’s Flory folder is a flyer listing some of the books available.
