Character trait for January is “Self-Discipline”

Language Arts

Our story this week was The KiteWe worked on the comprehension skill of cause and effect.  It is important to remind children that understanding what happens and why can help them in their comprehension of a story.  In phonics the students learned how to blend long i words (CVCe).  The students learned that if you add e to Consonant-Vowel-Consonant words like hid(e), pin(e), rid(e),  the short i now becomes a long i sound.  The children also learned about contractions this week.  We made a contraction book and the children pretended they were surgeons and cut out the letters that were not needed to make the contraction.  The children learned that the apostrophe stood for the missing letters.

 Math

This week we have begun Topic 8, understanding Tens and Ones in math.  Understanding two-digit numbers as groups of tens and ones is a critical concept as children work with greater numbers.  Counting the number of tens and ones in a number is vital to children’s number sense and establishes the fundamentals for their future understanding of place-value concepts.  In your child’s homework folder this week was this topics home-school connection letter.  The game provided in this letter is a great way to see if your child understands place value.  Please take a look at this game and play it with your child to see if he/she sees the patterns on the hundred chart and understands tens and ones.

 Science

This week in science we learned that “The  Water Cycle” is how water moves from the Earth to the sky and back again to form clouds and bring precipitation.  The vocabulary words for this week were water vapor, evaporate, condensation, precipitation, and water cycle.  The children learned a song about the water cycle .  We also made a water cycle wheel in class.  Look for it in your child’s Friday envelope and have them explain the water cycle as they turn the wheel.

Read To Succeed/Six Flags Reading Club

How are the reading log minutes adding up?  I hope all the students are taking advantage of this great opportunity to earn a free ticket to Six Flags/Magic Mountain.  Reading logs do not need to be turned in until February 22nd.  It’s not too late to start!
