Health Tid-Bits
MedicationsDoes your child need medication at school? Medications, including over-the-counter or temporary, cannot be administered without a completed School Medication Form (educational code, section 49423); one for each different medication. Forms can be picked up at the school or downloaded from the district website. To download from the district, click on the "Student Services" icon at the top of the Flory website. Choose “Health and Wellness” and voila!
Additional note: A parent has the right to bring medication to administer themselves to their child without the School Medication Form. Simply check in at the front office and we will help you locate your child.
Injuries
If your child must be in school with any splints, casts, crutches, slings, elastic bandages, or even stitches, a Readmission to School After Injury form must be completed. This outlines, by the physician, any restrictions your child may need specific to his or his injury. We are here to assist in the healing process and can provide alternative recess activities. This form is available at the school or online at the District website. A note from the doctor’s office is also acceptable.
Medical Alerts
Does your child have any medical concerns? Although it is within the rights of parents to keep this information personal, allowing us to be aware can help in the care and safety of your child. Example: your child is taking a new medication and the doctor instructs to watch for side affects. Being aware we can help watch for those side affects during school hours and notify you ASAP of any adverse symptoms. And be assured, MUSD has strict privacy rules. This information will be kept confidential.
Got the Blahs?
If your child does not feel particularly well in the morning, but you want your child to try and attend school, with a plan if they still feel bad they can call home, please let the health technician know. It is not uncommon to have students come to the health office and state that their mom/dad told them can go home. Receiving the information direct from a parent helps us fulfill your wishes. If a student’s symptoms are mild and there is no fever, and we’ve received no notification from a parent, they will be returned to class.
If your child has vomited, had diarrhea, or a fever during the night or morning, please keep home until the symptoms have subsided for at least twelve hours. Not only does this prevent the spread of illness to others, but it further protects your child from picking up a new virus from school during a time their immune system is already stressed.
Medication Disposal
To safely dispose of unused or expired medications, it is now recommened to not flush down the toilet. Medications entering the sewage system is working its way back into our drinking water. Many pharmacies now have a take back program who will dispose by incineration. Another option is to place into used coffee grounds or clumping cat litter, put into a plastic bag and dispose. The grounds and litter prevent others from taking and selling on the street or small children getting their hands on it. And don't forget to remove the prescription label. Thiefs are finding more and more ways of obtaining information they can use for identity thief.
