Historical Figure Day @ Chaparral

Module Border Module Border

Chaparral Middle School is committed to equipping ALL students with the academic and social competencies needed for them to be productive members of the world in which they will live. We believe that students must be taught responsibility, how to make decisions,  and the communication skills that will be needed for them to function in a global society. Learning must occur in an environment free from prejudice and harassment, and rich in mutual respect. It is our belief, then, that we must implement programs and create conditions that maximize learning success for ALL students. We are dedicated to helping each student "become his/her best."

Make Good Use of Agenda Book

Every student should have received a Chaparral Agenda Book the first day of school. Not only is this a valuable planner for students to note homework assignments and other events/projects but it can also be used as a communication tool between parents and teachers.

For your convenience, important school information and policies are included in the front pages. Parents should periodically check their students' agenda book. Messages to teachers can be noted in the agenda book or sent via email.

A copy of this year's agenda book is posted on this website (see Helpful Links above). The school calendar is subject to change. Always refer to the
Calendar page for updates.

Students must replace lost or damaged agenda books. Fee = $10

May PTSA Meeting Rescheduled
The May PTSA meeting has been moved from Monday, May 19, to Tuesday, May 27.  The meeting will be held in the CMS Library at 6:30 p.m.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the great success of this year's Showcase of the Stars fundraiser.  This would include all the dedicated PTSA members who organized the many aspects of the event, the CMS staff members, and especially the students and their families who contributed to the homeroom raffle baskets and who turned out for the event and who bid on the many auction items.  It was another very successful year.  We hope everyone got a chance to enjoy the musical offerings from our Band and Chorus students, climb a wall or get a teacher wet, play carnival games, enjoy the dinner and snack choices from the various local food trucks, and maybe even take home a fun raffle basket.  Thank you all for your support of Chaparral Middle School!

If you haven't signed up already, but would like to receive text alerts from the school in the event of an emergency, please complete and return the "SMS (text messaging) Parent Opt-In Letter" to Chaparral or the district office.  Find forms (ENG/SPA) to download on the For Parents page of the MUSD website.

California students will not be taking the now obsolete STAR tests this spring . . . almost.  8th graders will still take the science portion of the STAR test but that does not mean everyone else is "off the hook."  Students will instead practice with the new assessments based on Common Core that are taken on computers rather than with pencil and paper.  Students will take either the language or the math test this year but which students take what has yet to be determined.  Results of this spring's testing (individual/school/district/state) will be not reported for this transitional year.  Test dates for Chaparral students will be announced when more information is available.

We are pleased to announce that we are now offering after-school homework help to our Chaparral students. Homework help will be held in a classroom or the Library and monitored by a teacher from 3:30 – 4:30, Monday through Thursday. This is a great opportunity for your student to get started on his/her homework or to get assistance with difficult assignments before going home. (This will not be a one-on-one tutoring setting.) Attendance is not required, but students must bring back the bottom portion of the notice they brought home recently with your signature indicating you have given your child permission to stay after school. We will keep an attendance log to verify student attendance, but we will not be able to make calls if students do not attend since this program is purely voluntary.

Extra copies of the permission form are available in the Chaparral office.

(printed copies will no longer be routinely sent home with students)

The Oct/Nov Newsletter (English & Spanish) is now posted: go to Student Bulletin/Monthly Newsletter page to view or download.

For technical reasons the calendar will be posted separately on the Calendar page.

Printed copies are available on request.  Call or come in to the Chaparral office.

Still need your Q Parent Connect log in?  Now it’s just a few clicks away.  Go to the Q Parent Connect login portal https://connect.mrpk.org/parents  and click on “Need your Login Information?”  Follow the instructions and your login will be emailed to you.  Your current email address must be on file with the school.  Call the Chaparral office if you need further assistance.

So just what is Common Core anyway?!

The Moorpark Acorn has published a very helpful guide to explain the new CCSS (Common Core State Standards) to parents and the community.  You will be hearing more and more about Common Core in the coming months so the Acorn has put together 10 key questions and answers to guide you.  Link here for the full text of the article.

Find links to the California Department of Education (Common Core and State Standards) to the left below (Helpful Links Box) or visit the MUSD Common Core page.

Just a reminder as you are doing your holiday shopping at the Simi Town Center, don't forget to show your receipts at Guest Services and earn points for Chaparral.  Receipts from any stores or restaurants from 9/1/13 through 4/30/14 are valid.  Our school earns 5 points for every dollar spent and can earn from $250 up to $2,500 for Chaparral.  Special holiday bonus points are going on right now.  Any questions or for more info visit www.shoppingpartnership.com or call (800) 539-3273.

New Parent to Chaparral? Looking for Ways to Help?

Supporting Chaparral
We are very happy to announce a new partnership opportunity that makes it possible for our parents and other supporters to direct a significant donation to our school when buying or selling real estate.  Chaparral is now partnering with Community Funding Solutions (CFS).  When buying or selling real estate with a CFS-affiliated agent, you can direct the equivalent of 20% of the agent’s commission to Chaparral.  Participation costs you nothing but can add up to a sizeable source of additional funding for our school and allows our local agents a way to support the community they work in.  Get the word out to family and friends who may be considering buying or selling a home in the near future.  Click the logo above for more information and to sign up for the program.
