Identification
As at other schools in MUSD, GATE students are not officially identified before the end of third grade.  However, at the primary grades, students are grouped into "primary high-achieving clusters" so that their teachers can provide enrichment opportunities designed for this population.

GATE at Campus Canyon

With the help of parent volunteers and a generous anonymous donation, Campus Canyon has provided an enriching experience for our GATE students this year.

Our programs include:

Junior Great Books
Two sessons of Junior Great Books have been held this year.  Following curriculum provided, volunteer parents have run six-week lunchtime sessions of reading group activities.  The first session used selections from the book, Alice in Wonderland, and the second session involved poetry, including student compositions.  Both programs concluded with celebrations of learning.

Heifer Project Powerpoints
Working with partners, students completed research projects about animals available from Heifer International, an organization that donates animals to developing countries.  Using powerpoint presentations, the students informed fellow fourth and fifth grade students about Heifer in general, as well as convincing peers to vote for their favorite animal.  Students plan to raise money to purchase the most popular animal.

Field Trips

Pratt-Whitney/Rocketdyne Science Expo - Along with GATE students from other Moorpark elementary schools, our students attended this popular science extravaganza.  Hands-on science was the order of the day!

California Science Center - Campus Canyon's GATE students spent the day visiting this outstanding museum, including the exciting CSI (can you figure out who 'done' it?) exhibit.  One highlight of the trip was the undersea-themed IMAX film.

Coming up:

University of California,  Santa Barbara - a tour of this prestigious campus designed for elementary age students is coming in June.

Backstage at a Newspaper - in the planning stages is a tour of a local newspaper.  This should be especially interesting for our students who staff our school newspaper.
