Law Section #: EC49423

Description:

Students may take medication that is prescribed for them by physicians and be assisted by the school nurse or other designated school personnel if the school district receives:

(1) a written statement from the physician detailing the method, amount, and time schedules for administration of the medication and

(2) a written statement from the parent/guardian indicating that the school district may administer the medication as per the physician’s instructions.

A form Authorization for Medication to be Taken During School Hours may be obtained from the Health Office or click the highlighted form name above to download/print the form.  At the elementary school level, parents should bring the medication to the Health Office at the beginning of the school day.  All medication must be in the original labeled container.  Cough drops and over-the-counter medications are discouraged, however, if determined necessary during the school day, there must also be parent/guardian written authorization.
