Dear Parents,

This year’s State STAR Testing Program begins for Arroyo West School students on April 27, 2010. 

All of our students will be assessed on the California Standards Tests (CSTs), a standards-based assessment.  Third, fourth, and fifth grade students will be tested on their knowledge of grade level standards in Language Arts and Mathematics.  In addition, fifth grade students will be assessed on their knowledge of 4^th and 5^th grade science standards.  Your student’s performance on the CSTs will be reported as a performance level (i.e., Advanced, Proficient, Basic, Below Basic, or Far Below Basic).   The State of California and the Federal Government’s No Child Left Behind emphasize student performance on standards.  The target for all students is to be performing in the Proficient or Advanced levels on the California Standards Tests. 

We use the results of the assessments to identify trends and patterns and to identify strengths and weaknesses in our instructional programs. In addition, the results help us identify individual students who are exceeding, meeting, or falling below the Standards.  With this information we can better plan for individual student needs and assure that our curriculum and instruction is targeting each child’s educational needs.  

We all want our children to perform well on these tests; however, please remember that tests are only a snapshot in time.  Our children have acquired a wealth of knowledge and skills this year.  We assess their academic achievement on an ongoing basis with multiple measures of achievement that include performance on classroom and homework assignments and on classroom and benchmark tests.  These activities, assignments, and assessments are informal and non-standardized and are given throughout the school year. 

Please join us in encouraging our students to do their best on the State assessments.  Assure your child that he/she is well prepared and should be confident in his/her ability to do a good job on the tests.  Help your child practice positive thinking and simple relaxation techniques.  The State and Federal governments require that we test no fewer than 95% of our students in order to meet the criteria for Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).  You can help us meet that requirement by assuring your child is at school and on time during the testing weeks.  As always, we appreciate the partnership role you take with us in the education of your students.

Este año las pruebas del Programa STAR comienzan el 27 de abril, 2010.

Todos los estudiantes serán evaluados a base de los Exámenes de los Estándares  de California (California Standards Tests - CSTs). Los estudiantes de tercer, cuarto y quinto grado serán examinados sobre su conocimiento de las normas de su nivel de grado en las materias de Arte de Lenguaje y Matemáticas. Los estudiantes del quinto grado también serán examinados en sus conocimientos sobre las normas de la materia de la ciencia del 4to y 5to grado. Los resultados del CST se reportarán en la siguiente forma: avanzado, proficiente, básico, debajo de lo básico, muy debajo de lo básico. La ley del Estado de California y del Gobierno Federal “No Child Left Behind” enfatiza el logro de las normas. La meta para todos los estudiantes es lograr el nivel de proficiente o avanzado en las Pruebas de las Normas de California.

Usamos los resultados de las evaluaciones para identificar problemas con nuestros programas académicos. Los resultados también  ayudan a determinar cuales estudiantes están trabajando mejor que el promedio, logrando lo básico o trabajando debajo del nivel de grado. Con esta información, podemos planear mejor las necesidades individuales de los estudiantes.

Queremos que todos los estudiantes logren éxito en estas pruebas, sin embargo, sabemos que las pruebas demuestran solamente una parte pequeña del logro final de los estudiantes. Todos nuestros  niños/as han adquirido una abundancia del conocimiento y habilidades. Nosotros evaluamos el éxito académico constantemente, usando medidas múltiples como  trabajos en la clase, tareas en la casa, pruebas semanales, logros de las normas del nivel de grado.  Estas actividades, trabajos y evaluaciones son informales y sin normas y los estudiantes los reciben dados durante el año escolar.

Les pedimos su apoyo en animar a nuestros estudiantes que hagan lo mejor que puedan en las evaluaciones estatales. Asegure que su niño/a este preparado/a y que tenga confianza en su habilidad de tener éxito en las pruebas. Ayude a su niño/a practicar pensamientos positivos y técnicas simples de relajación. El estado y gobierno federal requiere que no haya menos de 95% de los estudiantes tomando las pruebas para poder cumplir los criterios para el Progreso Adecuado Anual (Adequate Yearly Progress – AYP)  Asegúrense que sus hijos lleguen a la escuela a tiempo, descansados y preparados. Como siempre, les agradecemos su apoyo, el cual es muy importante y valioso en la educación de sus hijos.
