Options For Families of Students Learning English

 Structured English Immersion is a program designed to teach English to students who speak little or no English in an instructional setting where English is used most or all of the time.  The goal of the program is to teach English efficiently and effectively so that students will be successful in mainstream English language classrooms.  Formal English language development curriculum is the major focus of this program. All subjects in the core curriculum (language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, health, etc.) are taught in English, using sheltered strategies (real objects, photographs, pictures, hand gestures, etc.).  Initial classroom placement in Structured English Immersion is required by law for at least thirty calendar days for all students less than ten years.  Preview-review methods and Spanish can be used as needed for clarification and to ensure comprehension.

 

The Alternative Program provides instruction in both Spanish and English.  This program will be offered to English Learner students whose parents have requested and been granted a Parental Exceptional Waiver, following the thirty-day placement in Structured English Immersion. Academic and literacy instruction occurs in Spanish and English with daily second language development.  Students in lower grades typically receive more instruction in Spanish, with daily lessons in English Language Development.  As students progress through the grades more and more of their instruction is in English. Formal instruction in English reading begins in 2nd grade. Students are provided with support in Spanish in the classroom and may have some homework assignments in Spanish so that parents can better assist them.

 

In grades 3-12, the alternative program offers English literacy instruction, daily English language development, and support in Spanish in content areas.  Teachers preview and review lessons in Spanish and explain concepts in Spanish as necessary to increase student understanding.

 

The English Mainstream Program is instruction conducted at the level of native speakers of English, with no primary language support. Students continue to receive additional and appropriate instruction in English language development at their proficiency level until they meet the requirements to be reclassified as fluent English proficient (FEP). This program teaches literacy and all areas of academic content in English.

District English Learner Advisory Committee
All parents of English Learners are invited to participate in the District English Learner Advisory Committee. This group advises the Board of Education on the Master Plan for services for English Learners and key aspects of our program.
