Campus Canyon Adopts Seabees

About Our School
        Campus Canyon School welcomes students and parents to join the faculty and staff in providing a successful educational experience. A spirit of teamwork creates a positive, warm, and nurturing atmosphere that is evident not just on-campus but finds its way into homes and the larger community as well. This spirit is defined in the mission statement of Campus Canyon which reads as follows:  “Through the cooperation of community and staff, we are committed as a Professional Learning Community to ensure that all students at Campus Canyon achieve high levels of learning and are prepared to apply that learning to become successful members of our global society.”  We will ensure the learning of all students at Campus Canyon by:
·   Meeting regularly with all staff, parents and students in collaboration as a Professional learning Community;
·   Monitoring the academic and social progress of all students to achieve proficiency and above;
·   Using researched based programs, structures and strategies to ensure a strong Core I program, Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) and interventions;
·   Committing to Response to Intervention (Rtl) and an effective Pyramid of Intervention to meet the needs of all, academically and socially;
·   Using technology in all curricular areas with direct instruction, assessment, skills practice and reinforcement, intervention, research, student application of learning and as an effective communication tool;
·   Communicating effectively in matters of school business, ways to support students and Campus Canyon in partnership, learning goals and progress of goals;
·   Developing partnerships with local college institutions to practice, enrich and reinforce grade level standards through up-dated best practices and to further illustrate and demonstrate the concept of life-long learning for all.
The three "Cs", commitment, cooperation, and community are recurring themes throughout the school.  We are proud to be a California Distinguished School and Title I Academic Achievement Award winner for the second year in a row.

        Campus Canyon is a beautiful facility, which was opened in 1987. It is a K-5 school located in southeastern Ventura County. The school is comprised of 17 permanent classrooms in the main building, a 10 room wing, and 5 relocatable classrooms.  There are currently 18 classroom teachers and three teacher specialists. The current enrollment is 403 students; however, enrollment is expected to increase given continuing development of new homes in the area. The school also draws from a neighborhood of low and middle income families.  Average class size for Kindergarten through grade three is 20 students and averages in grades 4-5 is 30 students.

        The primary goal to which Campus Canyon faculty, staff, and parents aspire is a COMMITMENT to excellence in education. It is a shared vision that each student experiences a balanced, relevant, motivating, and academically challenging program. To this end, a variety of teaching applications, differentiation and instructional materials are employed. Class programs include lessons that are meaning-centered and which develop higher-level thinking skills. Activities across the curriculum, whether hands-on, group, directed or independent give students the opportunity to experience learning through a variety of modalities. After-school enrichment programs support the curriculum and extend student learning. Bilingual teachers and support staff provide equal access to the core curriculum for English learners. A Special Education Specialist, Reading Specialists, Full Inclusion Specialist, and Speech and Language Specialist provide support for all learners. Instructional resources at the school include a 34-station computer lab, a library/media center, and two computer in every classroom.

        Exceptional parent support illustrates the sense of COMMUNITY at Campus Canyon. Parents, grandparents, and community members volunteered over 7,000 documented hours of assistance on campus last year. PTA (Parent Teacher Association) raises over $20,000 to support academic programs. A major focus of this money is an excellent fine arts program affording each student weekly access to art and music instruction. The arts come alive for students and families with the presentation a musical program each year and an evening art exhibit. Community involvement is further exemplified by the recognition of area colleges that Campus Canyon is an excellent training ground for student teachers.  We draw student teachers from Pepperdine University, Cal State University at Northridge. Cal State University at Channel Islands and California Lutheran University.

        Campus Canyon programs and activities exhibit COOPERATION between students, faculty, parents, and community members on a variety of levels. Cooperation between teachers includes team planning at each grade level. Cooperation between school and families includes multicultural activities which communicate support and respect for the diverse student heritage. Student to student cooperation is demonstrated through cross grade level study buddies. For example, third, fourth and fifth grade tutors assisting first graders reinforce beginning reading skills and communicate the importance of reading. Students and community members cooperate through Service Learning Projects club for second grade students.  Our College Connection with nearby Moorpark College provides many opportunities for our students to visit the college campus for curriculum units or to have the college students present lesson in our classrooms.  Our students attend college sports events to enhance our community parrtnership between our campuses.  The Junior Achievement Program, Multicultural Day activities and the EATM zoo involving the college are favorites.

Moorpark Rotary Donates Dictionaries

        Campus Canyon third graders received Gazetteer dictionaries from the Moorpark Rotary Club this week.  Students were thrilled to have their own dictionary presented to them by Scott Moser this week.  Students quickly found the longest word (1,909 letters), Braille, the solar system, flags and all sorts of useful information in addition to the words.  Several students took their new dictionaries with them to recess to spent time perusing the contents.  Teachers look forward to this dictionary project from the Rotary Club where students get a personal copy to use in classroom projects in the third grade curriculum and years thereafter.
